Reflections on our 50th Reunion

I had a great time. You were all so kind to me, and most of all, thank you for not stepping on me.

Jack

PS My human had a great time too.

Most interesting fact I learned at reunion - That in 1969 I spent about a week camping at a beautiful spot named after Cliff Cates' grandfather. In Vietnam thay named firebases after Marine commendants.

On a more serious side. On the drive home I realized that during my three years at MH I can remember speaking with only four Northfield girls, my sister (Carol Beyer 62), Cynthia Dean 63, Mary Savage 64 and Cathy Pelton 64. At the 50th reunion many Northfield women greeted me as an old friend and schoolmate. But we were not really schoolmates, they went to Northfield and I went to Mount Hermon. Those friendships were made at various reunions, (The motorcyle reunions, 20, 30, 35 & 40) and the 45th. And now it does seem that we really did all go to school together.

What Was your Hometown While You Were At Northfield Or Mt Hermon?

Centerport NY

Number of years you attended Northfield or Mount Hermon?

3 years

Dorms in which you lived:

Sophomore Overton 4th floor, Junior & Senior Crossley 4 North.

Most memorable N/MH experience/s: could be "feasting" on Saturday nights after lights out and/or sneaking out of the dorm or something like the thunder and lightning at Christmas Vespers or a significant athletic triumph. What do you remember that brings a big smile to your face?:

A snowy winter night.

I am standing outside the doors at the north end of Crossley and say or think, "Come on God, if you are there, prove it."

There is a bright flash of lightning and then the crash of thunder. Coincidence, maybe, but it was the only lightning that night.

I got my name in the yearbook for being in a three way tie to reach the top of Mount Monadnock on Mountain Day. The cross country team took off running and I took off plodding. At some point Jeff Weed, Connie Putnam and I were hiking together when we realized that there was nobody in front of us. We decided that between us the race was over and we would finish together.

What do you remember about your dummy / work jobs... that you want to share?

I was on Campus Crew for all three years. I have also been on Campus Crew for the last 39 years, still learning about the "dignity of labor."

Which faculty / staff members and coaches do you remember with respect and affection and why?

Don McAlister and Don LaChance, my work bosses for three years. These were the people I would look up on my early visits to MH.

(FOR EXTRA POINTS) : Tell us how the friends/education/lifestyle/traditions of the Northfield Schools impacted your life in 1964 and through the last several decades:

Mount Hermon made me comply with the draft. I was not really against the war in Vietnam, I was against my personal involvement in it. By the time I got my draft notice in May of 68 the war was becoming very unpopular and avoidance was becoming more accepted. Mom, Dad had died the year before, would have accepted me going to Canada, but something I had studied at MH kept me from going that route.

Short version - In the Crito, Socrates has been condemend to death. His friends come to save him by having him escape. Socrates says no. His reason being, since he did not fight against the laws that condemned him before they were used to condemn him, it would be unjust to escape after he was condemned.

So I have my MH education to thank for my enlisting in the Marine Corps.

Where Have You Lived the Past 45 Years??

In 67 years I have lived in 5 houses all less than 3 miles apart. With houses 1, 3, 4 and 5 all being in Centerport NY.

Your Education after N/MH undergraduate Degree (where, when) Any Graduate/Professional Degrees: where, when, what):

Jan 67 - May 68 LIU C. W. Post
Jun 68 - Mar 71 USMC Sgt E-5
